India's Demographic Dividend

India's youth in the age group of 10 years to 24 years is one of the biggest cohorts, contributing of little over 37 crores. The age group is the biggest in the world right now. This cohort is divided into three separate groups 10-14 years, 15-19 years & 20-24 years, are at different levels of their career. The youngest cohort is in mid-school or high school. The mid-cohorts are in the high school/higher secondary school. The eldest cohorts are in Higher Education or already in their early professional career. While this is a great advantage for India's own growth over the next 20/30 years, these cohorts will be subjected to intense competition amongst themselves if they stick to only the traditional professions such as MBBS or Engineering.

To explain the above statement let's take the example of MBBS as a Professional Career.

In 2021, there were over 16 lakhs of registrations for the NEET examination for about 83 thousand MBBS seats across India. So the chance of getting an MBBS seat is less than 1% for the initial applicants

Similarly, now let's take the example of Engineering as a Profession.

In India, about 12 to 13 lakh students appear for the JEE (Mains) every year.  The top 100 colleges in India have approximately 45 thousand seats. So getting into an IIT is about a 1% chance. Getting into one of the top 100 Engineering colleges of India, the chances are slightly better at about 3%. If we consider the quotes, then the chances for the General Category students are even lower.

So, young children and Parents should explore all the possible options rather than getting stuck at a particular traditional career option.

World Population Growth and its impact on Career Planning;

There are several countries in the world, such as the European nations, Japan, some part of North America, where the population is actually shrinking.

So, a lot of young population can plan their careers in such a manner, they are in a position to take up professional careers which are growing in demand.

This will help them to be relevant not just in India but also for the whole world with respect to their professional career. Young children who are in their school should definitely try to learn a foreign language, which will help them in their future professional career along with academics.
