As it dragged into 2021, and now into 2022, that emotion has transformed.

On 1st Jun, 2023, I along with my two children were off to my hometown Berhampur. The occasion was, Thread Ceremony of our Son Suraj, which is a ritual amongst the brahmins in our region. The celebrations took place over 4 days from 9th Jun to 12th Jun. On 12th Jun over 400 guests (mostly the very close family members, relatives and friends along with their families) participated the event. I learned this concept recently through a podcast episode. Luke Burgis while talking to Amit Varma in his podcast The Seen and the Unseen. The term “mimetic desire” was coined by René Girard , a French historian, literary critic, and philosopher of social science. According to Girard, mimetic desire is the desire to obtain an object or experience that is not inherently desirable but becomes desirable because someone else desires it. In other words, people desire things because someone else - a model - did first. Imitation is the force that shapes human desire. Girard’s theory of mimetic desire has been influential in fields such as anthropology, sociology, psychology, and literary studies.
